Morning Fire Update: June 25

Several major fires are still burning throughout California. Here's an update:

·      Wednesday night a brushfire was sparked in Santa Clarita near Interstate 5. According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department Twitter page the Calgrove Fire is currently 398 acres and is 60% contained. All evacuations have been lifted.

·      Nearly 2,000 firefighters have been battling the week old Lake Fire easy of San Bernardino. It’s currently torched more than 23,000 acres and is 21% contained. Highway 38 remains closed and mandatory evacuations have been issued for Burns Canyon and Rimrock areas. Advisory evacuations have been issued to residents in the areas of Lake Williams, Erwin Lake and Lake Baldwin. An evacuation center has been set up at Copper Mountain College in Yucca Valley.

·      South of Lake Tahoe, the Washington Fire still threatens the town of Markleeville. It’s grown to 17,000 acres and is just 10% contained, despite the efforts of nearly 900 firefighters. The fire was first detected Friday. It’s closed Highway 89 south of Markleeville and Highway 4 is severed near Monitor Pass. Several campgrounds and trails in the region are closed. Advisory evacuation warnings have been issued to Markleeville residents.

·      In Madera County the 500-acre Sky Fire is 95% contained. Madera County’s other blaze, the 900-acre Corrine Fire is 98% contained.

In the North State:

There’s currently no major fire activity, but there is some activity that’s interesting

·      A year old fire is apparently still burning, or at least smoldering in Siskiyou County. The Happy Camp Complex that burned more 130,000 acres in the Klamath National Forest and was one of the biggest fires in the North State last year has at least four small hot spots within its perimeter that are still burning. Officials say the hot spots are due to trapped latent heat, which is normally put out by rain and snow during the winter, but with little to no snow this year that didn’t happen and the fire overwintered. All hot spots are expected to stay within containment lines and shouldn’t be an issue.

·      Also in the North State in Trinity County is the 1,550-acre Saddle Fire northwest of Hyampom. It currently remains 95 percent contained.

Recently contained fires:

·      Park Hill Fire (San Luis Obispo County) – According to Cal Fire the fire is 100% contained at 1,791 acres.

·      Loma Fire (Contra Costa County) – According to Cal Fire the fire has been 100% contained at 533 acres.

·      Red Fire (Madera County) – According to Cal Fire the fire has been 100% contained at 135 acres.
