The lure of extracting quick cash from nearly worthless shake will lose a bit of its luster next month thanks to action by the Shasta County Board of Supervisors Tuesday.

As expected, the board unanimously gave final approval to severe restrictions on the sale and possession of certain kinds of refined butane, in hopes of clamping down on explosive-prone illicit laboratories.

The ordinance makes it a misdemeanor to buy or own more than 600 milliliters of the gas within the county at any time.

Butane can be used to refine marijuana leaves, stems and less potent parts of the plant into a powerful intoxicant. The process of creating butane honey oil, however, is fraught with danger due to the fuel’s properties and explosive nature.

The ordinance takes effect March 24.
