Supervisor Candidates Facing Off Tonight

Mother Jones

The four candidates vying for two seats on the Butte County Board of Supervisors face off at a League of Women Voters sponsored event this evening.

Tonight’s event might be the only chance to see the hopefuls debate as the victors will likely emerge March 3rd .

Two candidates are competing for each of the two seats up this year. Incumbent Bill Connelly is defending his first district seat from challenger Ian Greene. The district stretches from forests east of Stirling City, down to the Yuba County line near Rackerby. It includes Yankee Hill and Concow, areas scorched in the Camp Fire.

Restoration, escape routes, Lake Oroville and forest management are likely to figure large among issues.

In district 4, which stretches from the southern edge of Chico to beyond Gridley, newcomers Tod Kimmelshue and Sue Hilderbrand are challenging each other for the seat now held by Steve Lambert, who opted not to seek for re-election. Growth, development and agriculture, along with declining aquifers may prove key issues there.

The contests will only go to a November run-off if no one gets a majority.

Tonight’s debates, organized and hosted by the League of Women Voters of Butte County, will be held at the Black Box Theatre in the Arts Building on the Butte College main campus.

The doors open at 6 this evening, with the debate starting at 6:30. The event is free.

There will be no traditional polling places in the county this year, which has adopted a vote-by-mail system, though it will have sites available to drop off marked ballots and to register and vote provisionally. Ballots are scheduled to be mailed out February 17th.
