Pop-Up Shelter In Chico Needs Temp Home
Safe Space, a roving seasonal homeless shelter in Chico is itself looking for temporary homes.
Run mainly by volunteers, Chico’s Safe Space Winter Shelter put out an urgent appeal yesterday, seeking spots to operate over four weeks between now and mid-March.
“At this point, we’ve run out of places that are able to give us their church halls or whatever, a space where we can lay the mattresses and bedding for people to keep them safe and warm.” said Nancy Wirtz, a member of the organization’s board.
Safe Space has no permanent home, operating at different locations, usually a week at a time, accommodating 60 people a night. In an email distributed in Chico, operators asked for space for the weeks beginning February 2nd and 23rd, along with the first two weeks of March.
Wirtz said the outcome if no space is found will be hard on those already hurting, and probably won’t be appreciated by the community at large.
“What happens is that people go out and they sleep under bushes. And, many of the people who live in this community are not happy to see people under bushes.” Wirtz said.
The organization is in the process of obtaining a permanent facility.
