Caleb Duerr, 39, escaped the Plumas County Jail on Friday, Sept. 27, 2024.

An inmate jailed for several domestic violence charges escaped from the Plumas County Jail this morning.

According to the sheriff’s office, Caleb Duerr escaped around 8 a.m. Friday and was last seen in Quincy. Officials advise residents to call 911 if the escapee is seen.

“We want residents to know that he escaped and that he may be in the area,” said Deputy Chandler Peay, the office’s public information officer. “We don’t have any information to an exact area that he could be in at this time. We request our residents to be vigilant and take all precautions for their safety.”

The way Duerr escaped is not confirmed yet and it is under active investigation.

The sheriff’s office told NSPR other law enforcement agencies are involved in the search for Duerr.

“We’ve also enlisted local support from California Fish and Wildlife, California Highway Patrol and the United States Forest Service Law Enforcement,” said Peay.

Peay said the sheriff’s office has made a mutual aid request for additional K-9 units through the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services.

“And we have air support that will be provided to us by the California Highway Patrol,” Peay said.

Duerr is described as 6' 1" with brown hair and blue eyes. The sheriff’s office says “he is considered violent and dangerous.”

If residents think they see someone who matches the description, Peay said, “keep a safe distance and call 911 and let us know.”
