Blue Dot 196: Wildlife Veterinary Heroes: Drs. Jamie Peyton And Marcela Uhart

Dave talks to two heroic veterinarians associated with UC Davis. First, Dr. Jamie Peyton shares her pioneering work on treating wildlife suffering from burns and other injuries associated with catastrophic wildfires.

Peyton uses amazing techniques involving the use of fish skins to act as bandages for severely burned animals like bears and mountain lions. There is also a way that you can support the efforts of the Wildlife Disaster Network that Peyton and her colleagues are affiliated with and the link is below.

The show then shifts focus to the plight of wildlife ensnared in worldwide trafficking schemes with Dr. Marcela Uhart, who is based at the Karen C. Drayer Wildlife Health Center's Latin America Program in Argentina.

Marcela tells Dave about the problems with people taking wildlife from their native realms for use as exotic pets, illegal medicine trade, and even exotic foods.

One of the auxiliary problems with removing species from their native habitat is the potential for spreading infectious diseases that can lead to pandemics.
