CA Sees First West Nile Virus Death This Year

California health officials say a senior citizen is the state's first person to have died from the West Nile virus this year.

The state Department of Public Health says the 65-year-old woman died in Nevada County. It offered no other details.

This is the third confirmed human case of West Nile Virus in California this year. The first two cases were found in two Butte County residents who had no symptoms and were unaware they had the virus.

So far 33 California counties have reported West Nile Virus activity this year – that includes six counties in the North State: Butte, Glenn, Colusa, Shasta, Sutter and Yuba.
