North State homeowners living in fire-prone areas will be shielded for at least a year from having their property insurance policies canceled or not renewed.
State insurance commissioner Ricardo Lara issued another moratorium that will help fire victims —– including those from the Zogg and North Complex fires.
Michael Soller, a spokesman for the California Department of Insurance, confirmed.“Over 60,000 homeowners policies in Shasta County are protected,” Soller said. “Over 70,000 in Butte County are protected –— have that one-year protection. And then thousands of homeowner’s policies in many counties east of the coastal mountains are protected where we had these enormous fires.”
Soller says the protections extend to renters and homeowners who live in — or adjacent to — areas where Gov. Gavin Newsom issued emergency declarations.
“Many folks have been evacuated. Many people have been out of their homes for weeks. And many people suffered damage even if it wasn’t a total loss,” he said. “So this protects those people who suffered less than a total loss and gives them that breathing room for a year from having to go and look for insurance, which we know is becoming increasingly difficult to find in the North State.”
Statewide, more than 2.1 million policyholders will receive protection connected to this year’s devastating fire season.
