Caltrans To Host Meeting On Hwy 32 Sidewalk Project

Caltrans

With construction less than a month away, Caltrans is hosting an open house Thursday, sharing information about major construction work scheduled for parts of State Highway 32 in Chico.

At the meeting, Caltrans will present details on a $4 million plan to build continuous Americans With Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalks from Highway 99 to Poplar Street.

Caltrans spokesman Gilbert Mohtes-Chan said the work will create new ramps, gutters, curbs and driveways along with sidewalks. Much of the approximately 1,000-yard stretch lacks any sidewalks at all, forcing pedestrians into a roadway where vehicles regularly exceed the 35 mph speed limit.

While 8th Street will see work on both sides, 9th Street will only receive sidewalks on the north side of the street due to limited funding. Mohtes-Chan said extending the work west of Poplar Street won’t be tackled until more money becomes available.

Work is scheduled to begin in mid-July and last about a year. Thursday’s hourlong meeting gets underway at 6 p.m. at the Valley Contractor’s Exchange, 951 8th Street.
