Chico State Students Hosting Prom Dress Giveaway For Local High Schoolers

Simple school expenses like calculators, binders and paper can be a monetary burden for parents, and then for those with high schoolers, there’s Prom. While many consider the occasion an important one, getting outfitted for it is not something everyone can afford.

To help all students in Butte County with the expense, a prom dress giveaway is happening in Chico. Called Cinderella’s Closet, the annual event is hosted by Chico State’s Student California Teachers Association.

Isabel Perez is the public relations chair of the SCTA.

“Sometimes some families can’t afford to even travel to get a prom dress for their daughter, or son, so we were like why don’t we try to get donations and create an event where we have free prom dresses,” Perez said.

High schoolers will be able to peruse and try on a variety of dresses, Perez said. There will also be accessories like shoes and jewelry available for students, Perez said.

This will be the first time Perez helps with the event. She said she’s most excited about seeing the students’ faces when they find that perfect dress.

“I remember when I was in high school and I went to Prom, once I got the dress that I liked I was so excited and like I had a smile for like a whole week and just talking about like ‘Oh my god I got my dress!’ with my friends. It’s just a special day,” Perez said.

The SCTA is still looking for donations and for volunteers, Perez said.

Gently worn prom dresses, shoes and accessories can be donated to the organization until Wed. April 3. Drop off locations include:

  • California Teachers Association Office, 1430 East Avenue in Chico, Drop off hours: 3-5 p.m.
