A common childhood dream will come true Friday for about 80 Butte County youngsters, who will each be presented with a bicycle, thanks to a group effort.

“Some of them are new and they have been donated, but a lot of them have been refurbished” Spokeswoman for the Butte County Sheriff’s office, Meagan McCann said.

The repairs were made by volunteers organized through the Butte County Department of Education, along with some perhaps slightly less willing participants assigned through the Sheriff’s office’s alternative custody program.

The lucky recipients of months of work were identified and selected by the county office of education.

Along with a bicycle, staffers from Butte County Public Health will present each youngster will get a bike helmet.

“They’ll be here and they’ll make sure the helmets are the proper size for the kids and the bikes are the right size. We’re all working together and looking forward to it.” McCann said.

This marks the giveaway’s 20th year. McCann said it’s a favorite among those working for the sheriff’s office.
