City Of Chico Officials Tackle Budget

City leaders will perform some economic triage Tuesday morning as they grapple with divvying a far-from-flush city budget.

The meeting is scheduled to continue into the afternoon.

Chico, like many California municipalities, has struggled financially since the housing bubble popped in 2008. Although economic activity has mostly returned, tax revenue hasn’t.

Elected officials will have the opportunity to fine-tune a draft budget prepared by the city manager’s office and hear updates on the financial states of the city’s myriad special accounts.

A recent pay raise for police officers and a determination to speedily pay off debts, suggests that any changes will be temperate.

Nonprofit groups are also scheduled to pitch their financial requests for certain federal funds issued through the city. Community-based nonprofit organizations, including those providing services to the homeless, arts groups hosting cultural events, groups offering educational and recreational opportunities for children and others will be vying for funding. The money comes from the federal Community Development Block Grant program but is distributed to cities which then disburse the money.

The meeting got started at 8:30 Tuesday morning.
