Firefighters are responding to a vegetation fire in Butte Creek Canyon east of Chico that broke out about 3 p.m. The last official estimate (via Cal Fire Butte County on Twitter) put the Honey Fire at 75 acres in size.

Evacuations are still in place for Zone 9, Upper Honey Run Road, and Lower Skyway Zones. The Evacuation Order for Zones 4, 10, and Lower Neal Zone is being downgraded to an Evacuation Warning, according to official city and county social media. The evacuation warning for Zone 1 has been lifted. Evacuation Zone maps can be found in the slideshow at the top of this post.

Evacuating residents should use Clark Road. Skyway has been closed south of Pearson Road. Black Olive Drive is closed at Skyway. Eastbound Skyway is closed at Bruce Road and Neal Road is closed at Highway 99. Westbound Honey Run Road and westbound Elliot Road are closed at Skyway, and westbound Valley View Drive is closed at Oliver Road.

A shelter is open at Neighborhood Church in Chico at 2801 Notre Dame Boulevard. If you need a paratransit, call 2-1-1. There is also a public assembly point at CMA Church on Clark Road.

Large animals evacuated due to the Honey Fire can be taken to Camelot, 1985 Clark Road. Small animals can be taken to 2279 Del Oro and Mono in Oroville.

According to Cal Fire, the blaze began near Honey Run Road at Merlin Lane — around the spot where Honey Run Road begins climbing steeply out of the canyon. The canyon is about a mile north and west of the town of Paradise.
