People who suffered some financial loss or inconvenience due to the Carr Fire can still apply for help with groceries, but they’ll have to move fast.

Applicants have until Wednesday evening to apply for emergency food aid in Shasta County.

Jill Haskett is a spokeswoman for the Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency.

“What we want to do is just make sure we’re providing for those people who have suffered through all other sorts of loss,” she said. “They may have lost their house, they may have lost food, or can’t work.”

Haskett said you didn’t have to suffer an enormous loss to qualify. Having had food spoil during a fire-related power outage or losing income because your workplace is in an area ordered evacuated can be enough.

The food aid is distributed as special disaster-related CalFresh debit cards. CalFresh is the rebranded name for food stamps.

Haskett said that people who typically don’t qualify for CalFresh can receive so-called Disaster CalFresh. Haskett said anyone qualifying receives the maximum grant available to their household size. Applications must be received by the Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency before 6 p.m. Wednesday, August 29th. The agency has offices in Redding at 2460 Breslauer Way and at 1220 Sacramento Street.
