Highway 3 Detour Opened In Trinity County

Caltrans

For residents and drivers in the Trinities coping with the Highway 3 washout, there’s some good news and some bad news.

The good news is a detour around the washout has been opened, via Trinity Mountain and East Side Roads.

The bad news: The detour is only open during highly restricted daytime hours and overnight, and only to four-wheel drive vehicles.

The detour, via Trinity Mountain Road and East Side Road, bypasses a 500-foot section of unstable roadway and a 50-foot washout. Parts of the route are unpaved and primitive. Pilot cars are guiding drivers through one way sections. The detour is open from 11 a.m. until noon, from 3 to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m.

Caltrans is aiming to rebuild and reopen the damaged part of Highway 3 the week before Memorial Day.
