Evacuations and road closures remain in place, but Cal Fire is reporting officials are starting to get a handle on the Mountain Fire.

It’s currently 820 acres in size, according to the Redding Record Searchlight.

The blaze was moving quickly earlier today, at one point, doubling in size in an hour, but according to Cal Fire Public Information Officer Robert Foxworthy the winds fanning the flames have subsided. He said, even so, it’s important that residents stay vigilant.

“There’s always a chance that we could have to expand the evacuation zone, just due to the fact that the fire isn’t completely extinguished and it’s still burning,” Foxworthy said.

He said those who are asked to evacuate should heed the notices.

“If you’re told to evacuate, please do in a timely manner,” he said.

According to Cal Fire, 1,110 homes and other structures are threatened and 3,885 residents have been ordered to evacuate. No injuries have been reported.

At this time, Pacific Gas and Electric Company is reporting that it has restored power to about 450 electric customers and that 750 customers are still without power.

An evacuation center is open at Crosspoint Community Church in Redding located at 2960 Hartnell Road.

Those needing help evacuating with animals should call Shasta County Sheriff Non-Emergency Dispatch at 245-6540.

Many evacuations and road closures are in place in Shasta County after a fire broke out in the vicinity of Bear Creek Mountain Road and Dry Creek Road north of Bella Vista.

Cheryl Buliavac, a fire prevention specialist with Cal Fire’s Shasta/Trinity Unit said the fire broke out just after 11 this morning and is moving quickly.

““Immediately the column was visible with a pretty strong north wind on it,” said said. “The fire’s currently at about 600 acres and is burning in a southwesterly direction.”

Buliavac said the fire is primary between Bear Mountain Road and Dry Creek Road.

According to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office website, evacuations and road closures are in place for many streets.

The Sheriff’s Office is urging residents via Twitter to leave their homes if they feel they are in danger rather than waiting for a call.

Buliavac described the terrain as steep with thick dense brush and said all of the evacuation areas are being threatened.

“It’s really important that people stay vigilant, monitor official sources,” she said. “This is an ever changing situation, the wind is really giving us a challenge.”

Shasta College has been evacuated, according to an alert from the campus. The Redding Record Searchlight is reporting that it’s being used as a command post.
