New Chico Police Chief Named

Michael O’Brien, who has spent 23 years in a Chico Police Department uniform, was named the department’s new chief Thursday.

O’Brien, already a lieutenant, will succeed interim Chief Mike Dunbaugh June 5.

City manager Mark Orme praised O’Brien’s character, integrity and outlook. Orme predicted that O’Brien will garner the respect and trust of rank and file officers, elected officials, administrators and local citizens.

O’Brien, in a statement, said he was humbled and honored by the opportunity. While acknowledging challenges, O’Brien predicted that better times are ahead.

A graduate of Chico State, O’Brien earned a master’s degree at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. He started his law enforcement career with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office.

Orme said O’Brien’s salary will be around $140,000. Former Police Chief Kirk Trostle received a salary of $156,000 and $82,000 in annual benefits for a total pay package of just over $238,000.
