One Dead As Small Plane Crashes In Redding

Firefighters, police and highway patrol units raced to the scene of a place crash in Redding yesterday, shortly after 11:15 a.m.

A small plane plummeted to the ground near Benton Airpark.

Rescuers located the downed plane in a ravine in the vicinity of the north end of the runway. Sean Coleman is a battalion chief with the Redding Fire Department.

“There was a single occupant and they did not survive the crash,” Coleman said. “I believe there was also a canine in the plane and I am not sure of the disposition of the animal.”

The pilot was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no human passengers. No one on the ground was hurt.

Placer Street was closed for several hours.

Initial reports suggest the plane crashed shortly after takeoff, perhaps after suffering mechanical difficulties.

Officials from the National Transportation Safety Board will be taking over the investigation as authorities attempt to learn what caused the crash. The pilot’s name is being withheld pending the notification of next of kin.
