Preparation, Not Panic As Coronavirus Reaches California

Containment of the novel coronavirus or COVID-19 appears less and less likely. The number of cases in China continues rising, and recent outbreaks in South Korea and Italy are causing alarm.  

 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned Tuesday that the virus is also in the U.S. and could potentially overload hospitals if the virus causes an epidemic.  While serious, rumors and disinformation about the virus are perhaps just as dangerous.

No cases have been detected in Butte County, but some Americans repatriated from Asia have been quarantined in the Bay Area.

To learn more about the virus, local preparations and how to reduce its severity, NSPR’s Marc Albert reached out to Lisa Almaguer, spokeswoman for Butte County’s Public Health Department. The conversation began with a definitive statement: there aren’t any local cases, but that could change.
