Sierra Nevada Acquires San Francisco Brewery Sufferfest

Iconic homegrown beer-maker Sierra Nevada Brewing announced Monday that it had acquired Sufferfest Beer Company, a San Francisco-based niche brewer.

Terms of the deal were not released and several details await regulatory approval, but Sufferfest, a firm founded in 2016 would mark Chico-based Sierra Nevada first expansion through acquisition.

Sufferfest, which markets to active amateur athletes, produces five different brews. Some are low calorie, others nearly gluten-free. One mimics an exercise drink, with a higher salt content, meant to replace sodium lost in sweat.

Though based in San Francisco, Sufferfest has their beer brewed and bottled in Denver by a separate firm. Sierra Nevada Spokeswoman Robin Gregory said that will change and Sufferfest production will move to Chico.
