Spring Break, St. Patrick's Day Overlap Limits Holiday Partying

Inebriated St. Patrick’s Day revelers kept Chico police busy Tuesday, though authorities say changes in the academic calendar helped limit alcohol-fueled exuberance.

In all, four DUI arrests were recorded along with 19 for public intoxication. Another eight were detained on other charges.

Authorities said that Chico State’s recent practice of scheduling spring break to overlap with St. Patrick’s Day helped reduce boorish behavior. Many students leave town for the break. Police department officials noted that alcohol-related problems among students associated with St. Patrick’s Day are increasingly shifting to Cesar Chavez Day.

A total of 11 of those arrested Tuesday are enrolled at Chico State, another two at Butte College.
