Train Claims Life; Funding Available To Fight Farm Smog; Goats In Red Bluff

Union Pacific

Authorities in Redding are attempting to positively identify the remains of a man — believed in his 60s, who was struck and killed by a Union Pacific freight train early yesterday. The man was struck by a Roseville-bound train at Breslauer Way around 2:15 Monday morning.

Farmers using older, dirty burning diesel powered agricultural vehicles may be eligible for financial help for upgrades. Officials with the Butte County Air Quality Management District announced that $1.6 million dollars in grant funding will be available this year to subsidize cleaner burning engines and entirely new agricultural equipment.

The grants are available through the state Air Resources Board and administered by local air districts. Funding is generated by California’s carbon cap and trade program.

Air districts serving other counties have similar programs.

And finally, a thousand goats will be munching their way through 100 acres of the Mendocino National Forest’s Red Bluff Recreation area starting today. The goats are being used to reduce wildfire risk.

Officials said that the goats will be prevented from accessing the Sacramento River. Elderberry bushes, considered critical habitat locally for the endangered Valley Elderberry Longhorn Beetle will be protected from the goats.

As today is the fifth Tuesday in the month, most local city and town councils and county boards of supervisors are not meeting today.
