Host Dave Schlom visits Zeke Lunder in a conversation recorded while the Park Fire was raging in the foothills and mountains of Northern California.

Zeke is a pyrogeographer and host of The Lookout website and YouTube channel where Zeke shares his insights on fire behavior and forestry by using digital mapping. Zeke is a longtime resident of the region where the Dixie Fire burned in 2021 and where the Park Fire is currently burning.

He knows these mountains and the history of forestry practices intimately and shares how the past informs the present and the future. In the interview, Zeke correctly warned that like the Dixie Fire in 2021, the Park Fire could make another big run after essentially laying down for nearly a week.

That's exactly what happened and it remains to be seen when and where the fire will be stopped as it threatens the communities around Lassen Volcanic National Park.

Dave Schlom is the longtime host and creator of Blue Dot. From surfing to Voyager in interstellar space, rock guitar to orcas in our imperiled oceans, the topics on Blue Dot are as varied as the host’s interests and connections -- which are pretty limitless! An internationally respected space history journalist, Dave is also deeply fascinated by all aspects of the grand workings of nature’s awesome machinery on scales ranging from galactic to subatomic. And topics take in all aspects of the arts and sciences.
