One Year, One Hundred Miles Apart

Beginning October 8, 2017, wildfires, led in ferocity by the Tubbs Fire, raced into and around Santa Rosa, leveling neighborhoods and killing 44 people. One year and one month later, one hundred miles to the north, the Camp Fire largely destroyed the town of Paradise, and killed 85 people, displacing the 2017 firestorm as the most deadly and destructive in California history.

As public media outlets, KRCB and NSPR believe that our communities are connected by this joint trauma. Through collaborative reporting, we aim to reinforce that connection and collect the wisdom that can be shared to strengthen recovery and resilience.

The people you will meet in our stories are survivors, not victims. That understanding, learned from our neighbors, drives our work to illuminate and validate their experiences.
