It’s from The Becker Friedman Institute for Economics at the University of Chicago and it's hosted by Eduardo Porter and a good friend of this station, Tess Vigeland. Some 4.6 million Californians have filed unemployment claims since the coronavirus pandemic began in March. 

The number of claims has overwhelmed the state with a growing backlog and longer wait times for help. Unemployment websites have repeatedly crashed and are ill-equipped for the overload.

And for millions of residents laid off amid the crisis, financial support cannot come soon enough.

Today we’ll hear the latest regional and state news and then we’re focusing on how to file for unemployment, getting as many questions as we can answered from employment expert Jennifer Shaw of Shaw Law Group who was interviewed Tuesday by CapRadio's host of Insight, Beth Ruyak.

Today we’ll hear from Butte County’s Public Health Director about contact tracing efforts after more than 180 people at a church in Palermo were exposed to COVID-19 during a Mother’s Day in-person church service. We’ll also hear from the district manager of Paradise Irrigation District about what the Governor’s plan to reallocate a $7.3 million grant aimed at helping after the 2018 Camp Fire could mean for the district and its customers.   

On Mother’s Day, a person infected with COVID-19 attended a religious service in Butte County, potentially exposing more than 180 people to the disease. 

On Monday, NSPR’s Andre Byik spoke with Danette York, public health director for Butte County, about the incident and how the county is responding. He also asked about the recent announcement that the county’s health officer, Dr. Andy Miller, will be resigning July 10. Here are highlights from their conversation.
