North State Residents Receive Medal Of Valor

Fifty-two state employeesreceived the highest honor the state can bestow on its public servants Thursday at a ceremony in Sacramento.

The Medal of Valor was presented by Gov. Brown’s Executive Secretary Nancy McFadden. Sixteen of the awards were for Caltrans employees, including Gary Hahn of Redding who descended down an embankment covered with poison oak to save a woman involved in a 2006 auto accident.

Stephen Silas and Gregory Englund of Marysville attempted to rescue an injured man whose head and neck were trapped underneath an overturned vehicle, and Jerry Bachman and Johnny James of Eureka rescued an injured elderly couple from an upside down vehicle resting on a tree over a steep embankment.
