Charter To Remain Redding Cable Carrier

Charter Communications will remain Redding’s cable carrier following the scrapping of plans for a $45 million merger between Comcast and Time Warner Cable.

The deal, abandoned Friday morning, received intense scrutiny from regulators who said the new company would be too large.

Last August, the city of Redding had given the authorization for Comcast to take over its 40,000 Charter subscribers. But the company would have owned nearly 30 percent of cable systems nationwide, and 55 percent of broadband subscribers.

Charter has a contract with the city of Redding through 2019 that will go unchanged.
