Delays On Highway 44

Drivers using Highway 44 through the eastern part of Shasta County can expect some delays starting Tuesday as Caltrans start paving work near Old Station.

Contractors will be applying a type of surface derived from bauxite. The material partly repels water and is designed to reduce hydroplaning and skidding in bad weather. The material, Called High Friction Surface Treatment,  provides better vehicle traction than ordinary pavement.

Drivers can expect 10- to 15-minute delays between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and until 3 p.m. on Fridays.

The work is expected to take two to three weeks.

Correction (Monday, Sept. 7 at 3:20 p.m.):
A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that Highway 44 traverses the Sierra, when in fact, it does not.
