Highway 3 Repairs In Trinity County Will Take Months

Saturated soils and heavy rain last weekend undermined sections of State route 3 in Trinity County, causing a major washout, severing the road 19 miles south of Trinity Center.

Work on reopening State Route 3 may begin as soon as Friday in Trinity County where a 50-foot segment was washed away in a slide during last weekend’s heavy rain. An additional 500 feet of roadway was undermined and will need major repairs.

Caltrans is aiming to reopen the road the week before Memorial Day.

The slide is in the vicinity of Slate Creek.

Currently, no detour around the slide exists.

Caltrans and Trinity County public works crews have meanwhile cleared snow and debris from Trinity Mountain Road and East Side Road, a remote, partly unpaved route. Caltrans plans to open that road, connecting Highway 3 just north of Trinity Lake with State Route 299 just west of Whiskeytown Lake.

An emergency contract for the repairs was awarded to Tullis Inc. of Redding.
