Big changes are coming to Redding’s Caldwell Park over the next couple of years, thanks to a huge state grant. North State Public Radio’s Marc Albert has more.

Redding has secured a state grant worth $6.7 million for park improvements. The 74 acre park is on the east bank of the Sacramento River, north of the Sundial Bridge.

The 60-year-old park, and the city’s Sacramento River Trail will receive significant upgrades.

The park’s skate park will be expanded. A rock climbing and bouldering area will be added, along with a fitness course, better bicycle facilities, and a new restroom.

Lighting along the river trail and connections with surrounding areas will also see improvements.

The funding comes from 2018’s Proposition 68, which raised $4 billion dollars for parks, water infrastructure and environmental projects. Work is supposed to get underway next year and be completed in 2022.
