More than 100 days after sparking at the Feather River Canyon, the destructive Dixie Fire is now considered 100% contained.
Fire officials reported full containment of the fire Sunday evening (Oct. 24), following a spate of wet weather.
“The incident commander and his team had determined that with the current rains and the weather that’s coming in, that there was no longer any reasonable threat of the fire escaping containment,” said Michael Davis, a public information officer on the fire.
Davis added spokespeople on the fire have been answering phones, and full containment has been welcome news.
“I spoke with another gentleman this morning, and he said, ‘I understand the fire’s 100% contained.’ I told him that that was correct. And he just said, ‘Ah, this is going to be a great day,’” Davis said.
The Dixie Fire ignited on July 13 near the borders of Butte and Plumas counties. It burned nearly 1 million acres and destroyed more than 1,300 buildings, devastating the community of Greenville on its way to becoming the state’s second-largest wildfire.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
