A moderate earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 occurred near Chester in East Lake Almanor, according to the United States Geological Survey.
The USGS reports the earthquake hit at 4:19 p.m. this afternoon. The earthquake was also felt as far away as Reno and Sacramento as well as Chico.
In Chico, the California Highway Patrol is reporting its Chico dispatch cell 911 lines are currently down due to the earthquake. Those who are unable to get through via cell should call 530-332-1200.
So far there have been four minor aftershocks, all below magnitude 3.0. Residents in nearby communities such as Greenville, Mineral and Mill Creek report feeling the quake.
An earthquake of this size is capable of producing mostly minor damage to buildings.
