Californians have another month to file their 2022 taxes.

That’s according to an announcement the IRS made yesterday.

It’s in part a response to North State legislators who hope to pass a tax relief bill for wildfire survivors before the tax deadline.

Doug LaMalfa represents the 1st Congressional District of California.

“We’re happy that the IRS did agree to have one more month,” LaMalfa said. “We'd hoped for three or four months, but we'll take what we can get.”

LaMalfa is one of several members of Congress who signed a letter to the IRS earlier this month asking for an extension to the Oct. 16 tax deadline.

He has repeatedly introduced a bill that would relieve wildfire survivors from paying hefty federal taxes on settlement payments.

Weeks ago, that bill was making strides, but the ousting of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy delayed its progress.

LaMalfa says he’s optimistic the bill will pass before the new Nov. 16 filing deadline.
