March snow survey shows depth at almost double the average
Historic winter storms hit California this past week, bringing much-needed precipitation. Researchers at Phillips Station near Lake Tahoe recorded a snow depth of 116.5 inches, which is 170% of the April average for the area.

More than half the state is now out of a drought
According to new numbers from the U.S. Drought Monitor, 17% of the state is now officially out of a drought, and an additional 34% is classified as abnormally dry but not in a drought. A statewide drought emergency issued by Gov. Gavin Newsom in October 2021 still remains in place.

State proposes cuts to health program to balance budget
Public health officials in California say they’re disappointed by the governor’s plan to slash funding for a program that would bring people into epidemiology, microbiology and lab technician roles. The proposed $50 million cut comes as the state tries to close a multi-billion dollar gap in its budget.

Diablo Canyon nuclear plant gets go-ahead to keep operating
Pacific Gas & Electric has gotten the green light to keep operating California’s last remaining commercial nuclear power plant beyond the year 2025. The Diablo Canyon nuclear plant in San Luis Obispo County had been slated for closure because of longtime safety concerns.
