Government Highlights Poor Finance Practices Of Hundreds Of Colleges

Larry Darling

The U.S. Department of Education has named 556 universities and colleges that failed its financial responsibility test.

The schools named on the “heightened cash monitoring list” will have their financials under heavy scrutiny by the Education Department.

Of the more than 50 colleges in California named on the list, the vast majority are in the southern part of the state. The only school north of the Bay Area is Sutter Beauty College in Yuba City. NSPR’s calls to the school were not returned — they’re currently on spring break.

Though some of the institutions on the list are highly regarded universities, most are private, for-profit schools.
