The first flu-related death in the state this year was confirmed Wednesday by the California Department of Public Health.

According to a press release from CDPH, a person under the age of 65 died recently from the virus in Santa Clara County.

The release stated the death was a “somber reminder” that the flu can cause severe sickness or death. Last year the state saw 78 flu-related deaths in people under the age of 65.

Flu activity is sporadic, but usually peaks December through April. CDPH recommends everyone older than 6 months get a flu shot before the virus becomes widespread.
