Starting Thursday residents in Corning will have to cut back how much they water their lawns and plants. New regulations are now in effect that restrict watering of lawns and ornamental landscaping to two days a week and only between the hours of 8 p.m. and 8 a.m.
Dawn Grine, Corning’s public works director, said the new regulations aim to reduce the city’s water usage by 25 percent and will be enforced by the Public Works Department.
“Basically when people, or the water consumers, are watering during the daylight hours that is when the violation occurs,” she said.
Those caught watering after 8 in the morning or before 8 at night will first receive a warning. A $50 fine will be issued for each following offense.
The two days outdoor landscaping can be watered is up to each resident. The new regulations only apply to lawns and ornamental plants and trees. They do not apply to vegetable gardens or fruit trees, which can still be watered any day and time.
