Thousands of cyclists will descend on the Valley this weekend for one of the North State’s biggest and most challenging events on two wheels.
The 35th annual Chico Wildflower Centuryis set for Sunday. The classic 100-mile ride winds its way up challenging hills, through picturesque countryside and past miles of nut trees arranged in neat rows.
Janine Rood, Executive Director of the Chico Velo Cycling Club, said the ride remains hugely popular among bicyclists.
“This ride is a bucket list ride for many people,” she said. “We get people from all over the country and even from other countries.”
Exotic locales won’t be wel-represented this year. Rood said the only international entrant she’s aware of this year is from Canada.
Though some riders are competitive, the Wildflower isn’t a race. It’s more of a personal challenge. As in recent years, organizers have created shorter and easier routes for the less committed, and a punishing longer option with staggering hill climbs.
Rood expects about four thousand entrants, though the weather plays a part. Too hot, too cold, or rain and some two-wheeled warriors back out.
Right now, Rood is keeping her fingers crossed.
“Last I saw, the forecast for here was like, 73 degrees and a little cloudy — which is about as good as you can get,” she said.
Early registration closes Wednesday, though riders can still register through Sunday morning.
