Communities are being confronted with protecting the vulnerable during increasing extreme heat events, but a Chico State professor says cooling centers might not be the best option for those most at risk — the elderly poor. Also, Shasta County has a new evacuation zone system, and Butte County Library's "Access to Technology" program aims to help seniors and adults with disabilities learn how to use computers and navigate the web more comfortably.

Sycamore pool provides respite from heat | Changes to California’s power grid | Increase in alcohol-related deaths
Many in Chico turned to the city’s public freshwater pool to stay cool during triple-digit temperatures over the weekend. Also, California’s power grid is always a concern during major heat waves but new tools should help it stay online during high heat days, and alcohol-related deaths have climbed since 2006 with a dramatic increase during the pandemic.

‘Zombie drug’ in Butte County | More lightning fires over the weekend | Hurricane Hilary impacts limited for northern California
Health officials are warning that the concerning veterinary tranquilizer xylazine is being used to lace street drugs in Butte County. Also, the U.S. Forest Service says lightning strikes over the weekend led to at least two new fire starts in the Klamath National Forest, and northern California is expected to see limited impacts from Hurricane Hilary.

Depot Park scheduled to be cleared again | Shasta organization to celebrate Martin Luther King’s ‘Dream’ speech | Oak Way Community Garden
Unhoused individuals camping on the southeast side of Depot Park received enforcement notices from the City of Chico Monday, that’s after the northwest half of the park was cleared earlier this month. Also, the Shasta Beloved Community will host a program in Redding to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s ‘Dream’ speech that he gave on August 28, 1963 during the March on Washington, and NSPR visits Oak Way Garden a place for Chico gardeners without garden space to grow their own vegetables.
