CapRadio announced a layoff of 12% of its workforce Wednesday citing financial strains amid a slowing in donor support. Also, a new study has found that our warming climate has increased the frequency of extreme daily fire growth in California by an average of 25%, and thunderstorms are predicted north of Yuba City today.

Feather River Hospital won’t reopen | Tuscan Water District special election | Wonder Fire 40% contained
Adventist Health held a community meeting this week to apologize to Paradise residents but said the economics of rebuilding the Feather River Hospital don’t add up. Also, the Butte County Board of Supervisors approved a special election in December where voters will decide on the creation of the Tuscan Water District, and Cal Fire says the Wonder Fire north of Redding is 40% contained and 150 acres.

One year since McKinney Fire | Two years since Monument, McFarland fires | Covered California to reduce out-of-pocket spending for enrollees
Saturday marked one year since the McKinney Fire killed four people and destroyed more than 200 homes in the small community of Klamath River in Siskiyou County. Also, Saturday and Sunday marked two years since the Monument and McFarland fires, and officials at the state’s health insurance marketplace — Covered California — will begin using penalties levied against uninsured people to reduce out-of-pocket spending for enrollees.

The Chico ice rink operated at a loss its first two years, losing over $140,000 in 2021 and nearly $190,000 thousand dollars in 2022. Also, beginning this week some of Chico’s roadways will see a major facelift, and the deadline is approaching for veterans who were exposed to Agent Orange or other toxic substances to apply for backdated benefits.

Half of Depot Park cleared | COVID on the rise | Butte County sobering center
The city of Chico removed unhoused residents and cleaned up trash from half of Depot Park yesterday with plans to clear the other half soon. Also, a month ago the rate of positive COVID-19 cases in Butte County was about 6%, now it’s 19%, and the Butte County Board of Supervisors approved using funding from an opioid settlement for a sobering center.

No lifeguards at One Mile | Chico State sorority, fraternity hazing investigation | Reimagining Redding’s riverfront
Sycamore Pool in lower Bidwell Park has no lifeguards this summer despite widespread recruitment efforts. Also, a Chico State sorority and fraternity have been penalized for hazing and for violating the college’s alcohol policy, and Redding is asking residents to give input today about redesigning the city’s riverfront.
