Senior mobile home park residents led a long fight for rent stabilization in Chico but were shot down by a 2-4 council vote. Also, Shasta County supervisors have selected a former deputy district attorney with no experience managing elections as the new Registrar of Voters, and a new report found that the historic Hotel Marysville is at risk of collapse and may need to be demolished after a fire.

Shasta County’s Assistant Registrar of Voters says she will remain in her role to help ensure a smooth election. Also, a draft report of Butte County's annual tally of unhoused residents was presented at a meeting this month, and Butte County's board of supervisors will meet on Tuesday to decide on next year's billion-dollar budget.

Chico parent appeals ruling in gender identity case | Oroville Greyhound bus shooter sentenced to life in prison | Hulu makes documentary about Sherri Papini case
A Chico parent is appealing a 2023 decision barring schools from forcibly outing trans and gender questioning students to parents. An appeals panel heard the parent’s updated case in May. Also, Asaahdi Coleman was sentenced to life in prison Friday for the 2022 shooting of four people on a Greyhound bus in Oroville and killed one, and the popular streaming service Hulu is taking on the Sherri Papini case this summer.

Smoke may be seen near Oroville today and later this month as officials conduct prescribed burns at Thermalito’s forebay and afterbay. They are intended to reduce invasive plants and dry brush. Chico considers closing roads to cars in Lower Bidwell Park | Pride Month to be celebrated in Chico with events | California is struggling to find firefighters
Whether to close roads around Lower Bidwell Park to vehicles on certain days will be considered by the Chico City Council tomorrow. Also, June 1 officially kicks off Pride Month. Chico will join the celebration with many events, and California is having difficulty finding enough firefighters this year.

What the Supreme Court’s decision on homelessness means for Chico | Pit River Tribe gets land back | Redding launches new online utility payment system
The Supreme Court has sided with the city of Grants Pass in a landmark case on homelessness. The decision reverses a previous ban on criminalizing people for sleeping outside if they have no other options. In Chico, some say the decision could affect how the city responds to homelessness in the long term. Also, the Pit River Tribe is getting more than 1,500 acres of its land back in Shasta County, and the City of Redding is making it easier for utility customers to pay their bills online.
