Camp Fire time capsule memorial | Interview: What recovery means | California able to do more prescribed burning this year
Around 200 people gathered yesterday in Paradise to remember those they lost in the 2018 Camp Fire. Also, we’ll hear from Bruce Yerman, Director of Operations for the Camp Fire Collaborative about his work and thoughts on what’s still needed in the burn scar, and officials say precipitation and fewer massive wildfires this year have paved the way for more prescribed burning in California forests.

Extracurricular clubs help young Camp Fire survivors heal | Chico seeks to overturn law restricting the enforcement of homeless residents | EPA to discuss banning chemical that contaminates fish habitats
Tomorrow marks five years since the Camp Fire burned the town of Paradise and surrounding communities. As the area has rebuilt, community groups and youth programs have begun to return. Also, the city of Chico has filed an amicus curiae, or a “friend of the court” brief, with the U.S. Supreme Court in support of a widespread effort to overturn a federal court ruling that makes it illegal for cities to penalize unhoused residents camping on city property if the city doesn't have shelter beds available, and the Environmental Protection Agency will discuss banning a chemical found in most tires and many other rubber products such as shoes, synthetic turf and playground equipment.

Fire Victim Trust 5 years after the Camp Fire | Community moment of silence to be held at 11:08 a.m. today to honor survivors, those lost in the fire | Interview: What recovery means
Today marks exactly five years since the Camp Fire killed 85 people and leveled Paradise and surrounding communities. Three years ago, PG&E created the Fire Victim Trust to pay out settlements to fire survivors, but some say they’ve lost hope they’ll ever get their full payments. Also, today a moment of silence will be held at 11:08 a.m. to honor survivors and the 85 people who lost their lives in the fire, and we’ll hear from Kate Scowsmith, fire survivor and Disaster Case Management Systems Facilitator for the Camp Fire Collaborative about her work and her own recovery.

Insurance crisis spurs ‘Firewise’ neighborhoods in Paradise | Chico council discusses senior mobile home rent hikes | More bars in downtown Chico?
One neighborhood in Paradise joined the “Firewise USA” program last year. This year, 20 new neighborhoods are expected. Also, the Chico City Council voted to continue discussion about rent stabilization after residents at one senior mobile home are facing unaffordable rent hikes, and there are limits on how many bars can exist in the northern section of downtown Chico. But that might change once council members agree on where to take a new proposed ordinance that would lift those restrictions.

Shasta County failing to distribute millions in housing funds | Study says dangerous storm ‘sequences’ more likely | Oroville approves more downtown outdoor seating
The state is reprimanding Shasta County for its failure to distribute millions of dollars in housing funds. The California Interagency Council on Homelessness warned they’ll take action if they don’t turn over the money. Also, as scientists sound the alarm of rising global greenhouse gas emissions, one concerning side effect may be longer and more dangerous storm systems in California, and more outdoor seating for cafes and restaurants in downtown Oroville was approved this week by the city council.

Safe Space now without permanent office | Shasta County sees a Shigella infections rise | Butte supervisors approve payment plan
As of last week, local homeless aid nonprofit Safe Space Winter Shelter no longer has an office building. Also, the Butte County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a resolution allowing fire survivors to make monthly payments for building permits, and cases of a highly contagious bacterial infection are rising in Shasta County.

Shasta Regional Medical Center cited for putting patients in jeopardy | All-you-can-eat sushiin Chico | Butte County offering free student vaccines
Shasta Regional Medical Center was fined $155,000 for violations in 2023. Also, a new all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant is now in the old IHOP building, and students in Butte County can get the Tdap (or DTaP) and HPV vaccines free of cost at several upcoming clinics.

Grand Jury finds poor staph infection screening at Shasta County Jail | Oroville setting up non-emergency report system | Butte County holds meetings for no-cost building plans
A report from the Shasta County Grand Jury found that inmates at the local jail were not properly screened or treated for MRSA, a staph infection that is contagious and prevalent in jails, prisons and hospitals. Also, the city of Oroville is looking to overhaul the way citizens report non-emergency needs, and Butte County will hold two more community meetings about a new program to provide no-cost building plans that are suitable for disaster recovery housing.
