The man President Obama fired last week, from his job as the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, announced today that he plans to retire from the military.
For the past year, Gen. Stanley McChrystal oversaw U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, and spearheaded the counterinsurgency strategy they are trying to implement.
According to NPR's Rachel Martin, a U.S. Army spokesman confirms that McChrystal notified the Army that he intends to retire, but he did not release a statement or announce a date by which he plans to leave.
McChrystal's announcement comes one day before Gen. David Petraeus, whom President Obama nominated to replace McChrystal, goes to Capitol Hill for his confirmation hearing.
