UC To Require Vaccinations From Incoming Students

The University of California says it’s moving forward with its plan to require tuberculosis screening and proof of vaccination against measles and a half-dozen other diseases for almost all students. Alan Ray has the story from Sacramento.

Currently, the UC only requires vaccination against hepatitis B, though some campuses have additional requirements.

In the new plan, which the university says has been in development for a year, students will be required to show proof of vaccination against measles, mumps, rubella, chicken pox, meningococcus, tetanus and whooping cough beginning in 2017.

The plan is being phased in over three years.

By 2017, students who do not provide proof of the vaccinations and screening will have a "hold" placed on their registration.

The UC says its plan is based on recommendations from the California Department of Public Health.

The university says it will allow for exemptions for reasons of health or personal belief.

In Sacramento, I’m Alan Ray.
