Fires: August 16

Crews continue to make progress on rampant wildfires burning more than 200 square miles in and around Trinity County.

·        The Mad River Complex around Ruth Lake has surpassed 35 square miles. It’s 60 percent contained.

·        The Route Complex  has consumed more than 43 square miles and is 28 percent contained. Highway 36 remains closed from Van Duzen to Lower Mad River Road. Mandatory evacuation of the end of Kerlin Creek Road remains in effect. If an evacuation is ordered for Hyampom, authorities recommend using road 301 to reach Hayfork.

·        Also near Hyampom, the South Complex has burned more than 31 square miles. It’s 25 percent contained. Existing road closures remain in place. Two public meetings are scheduled for today. The first will be in Hyampom at the Volunteer Fire Department at 4 p.m., the second will be at Burnt Ranch School at 6. The Red Cross is operating an evacuation center at Solid Rock Christian Church in Hayfork.  

·        The Fork Complex, near Hayfork and Peanut has torched more than 50 square miles of forest. It’s 42 percent contained. State Highway 3 has re-opened.

·        The River Complex, north of 299, now exceeds 58 square miles and is still estimated to be 18 percent contained.

Elsewhere in California:

·        In Lassen County, firefighters are still mopping up the Dodge Fire. They’re especially trying working to preserve an area of green sagebrush that’s a part of managed habitat for Sage Grouse. The fire has burned 16.5 square miles and is 90 percent contained. It was started more than a week ago by a spark from a tree harvesting saw. 

·        In Humboldt County, wildfires totaling more than 7 square miles are burning in steep, rugged terrain. The fires are threatening Mount Lassic Wilderness, some timberland and habitat for threatened and endangered species.

·        The Jerusalem Fire northeast of Middletown has reached more than 39 square miles. Existing evacuation orders and road closures remain in place. An evacuation center is available at Kelseyville High School at 5480 Main Street. The fire is 82 percent contained.

·        Near Lake Berryessa, The Rocky Fire is now 100 percent contained at nearly 109 square miles.
