Suppression efforts are winding down for the mega-fires burning in Northern California, which are now all almost fully contained.
Valley Fire
Residents continue to return to their homes in all communities near the Valley Fire. The 119-square-mile fire burning in Lake, Napa and Sonoma counties is still 97 percent contained. The fire is among the three most destructive in recorded California history. It claimed four lives and destroyed 2,000 structures. The fire’s cause remains under investigation.
Butte Fire
In the Sierra foothills of Amador and Calaveras Counties east of Jackson, the 111 square mile Butte Fire is now 96 percent contained. The fire claimed two lives and has incinerated nearly 500 homes. All evacuations have been lifted.
Trinity County Fire Complexes
In the Trinity Region several major fires continue burning across broad swaths of remote forest. The 120-square-mile River Complex is 69 percent contained. The Fork and South fire complex are almost fully contained. Forest service officials say some of these blazes won’t be put out until significant rain falls on the area.
