Oroville Man Convicted In Fatal Highway 70 Shooting

Ker Vang, 24, was convicted of second degree murder, attempted murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle and other charges.

An Oroville man accused of opening firing on four people last October was convicted Monday on numerous charges.

Ker Vang, 24, was convicted of second degree murder, attempted murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle and other charges.

The shooting occurred a day and a half after gunfire was traded between rival gang members near a Hmong New Year’s festival in Chico.

Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey said Vang spotted but did not recognize the victims at a supermarket. Presuming they were rivals encroaching on territory, Ramsey said Vang followed them onto Highway 70 and opened fire.

The driver was struck in the cheek. The passenger, a 19-year-old student at Butte College, was struck in the head and killed. Occupants of the second vehicle were not injured. None of the four victims had known gang ties, Ramsey said.

Vang faces up to 74 years to life in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for December 10.
