Fire Update: Butte Co. Brushfire Quickly Doused, And More

Firefighters cleaning up debris in Lower Lake Calif., on Thursday 18 August. The nearly 4,000-acre blaze near Clear Lake torched several structures on Main Street.

Cal Fire strike teams moved quickly to contain and douse a brush fire in Butte County yesterday evening. Firefighting aircraft were quickly dispatched against the Wyandotte fire near Oroville. The fire, in the Palermo area, was held at a mere five acres.

Another fire, also first reported yesterday evening near Beale Air Force Base in Yuba County, was declared fully contained this morning. The fire, off of Hammonton-Smartsville Road, consumed 400 acres of grass and brush.

Residents in rapt attention as officials explain firefighting efforts and strategy at a community meeting in Middletown earlier this week.

Meanwhile, Cal Fire is reporting additional progress against the Clayton Fire near Clear Lake. Firefighters are strengthening fire lines and mopping up hotspots and continue assessing damage. Evacuation centers remain open. More than 1,700 firefighters are still battling the intentionally set blaze, which has destroyed 300 structures. The fire is considered 65 percent contained.

The U.S. Forest service says roughly 200,000 acres have been torched in wildland fires so far this season, compared to 537,000 acres in all of last year.
