Some Butte County schools to get more mental health support | Safe Space intake center to be at former 7-Eleven building | Downtown Chico businesses get letters to Santa
A $4 million grant to fund mental health care in underserved school districts was received by the Butte County Office of Education. The funding will go toward more mental health professionals and support for students. Also, Safe Space’s low-barrier emergency shelter in Chico is about to start for the winter. The nonprofit has announced its new intake center will be at the former 7-Eleven building on Main Street, and if you’re wanting to get a note to Santa you might want to head to downtown Chico. Santa has received hundreds of letters from kids thanks to mailboxes located at six downtown businesses.

The Mechoopda Tribe and the Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve set an intentional “cultural burn” at Chico State returning fire to land from which the Mechoopda were removed 140 years ago. Also, after months of research and polling, the Butte County Board of Supervisors discussed the data surrounding the opinions of registered voters about a library tax ballot measure, and Pacific Bell Telephone Company is suing Roseburg Forest Products Company for alleged negligence in the 2022 Mill Fire.

Butte County’s RV laws are difficult for wildfire survivors | Tuscan Water District wins approval | Butte Sheriff’s Office offering up to $30,000 in hiring bonuses
In rural Butte County, wildfire survivors who moved into RVs after their homes burned down face a deadline to rebuild or relocate. But affordable housing is hard to find in the burn scar. Also, the election results for the controversial Tuscan Water District were certified this week with the proposal winning approval, and the Butte County Sheriff’s Office is having trouble filling open corrections positions. To remedy this, the department is offering $10,000 and $30,000 bonuses for new recruits.

Shasta County ad hoc committee on homelessness takes action | Chico shopping cart ordinance discussion tabled | California water agencies could soon turn wastewater into drinking water
Shasta County convened a multi-jurisdictional ad hoc committee on homelessness in June. The committee presented a two-year action plan last week to strengthen Shasta County’s response. Also, Chico’s City Council voted 7 to 0 to send a resolution deciding the amount of penalty costs for businesses whose shopping carts are found off-property. A new bike park will be underway on Humboldt Road, and the California Water Resources Control Board yesterday approved new rules for turning water from toilets and other uses into drinking water.

Oroville nonprofit distributes Narcan to the community | Chico City Council to discuss shopping cart retrieval fees | CN&R to suspend its print edition
The distribution of fentanyl has led to increased overdose deaths across the nation. In Oroville, one group is working to educate the public about the dangers of the drug, and provide life-saving overdose medicine to the community. Also, Chico’s recently adopted shopping cart ordinance may have its associated fees approved by the city council tonight, and the Chico News and Review has announced it will cease publication of its printed issues in January. The weekly will, however, carry forward with its digital publication.

Safe Space winter shelter opened Sunday | Butte County ends permanent hauled water discussion | PG&E asks for another rate hike
Chico’s only warming shelter opened its intake center yesterday. Some people waited at the center’s new downtown location days in advance to sign up. Also, Butte County supervisors have ended the discussion regarding whether hauled water can be a permanent water source for the county, and PG&E has asked state regulators to approve another rate hike.
