Student Internship Opportunities
Position Summary
The Radio News Production Intern will gain hands-on experience at North State Public Radio (NSPR) while learning how local news is researched, written and produced for broadcast. The intern will work in NSPR’s newsroom alongside journalists to develop skills in broadcast writing, research and audio production.
Internship Details
- 3 units of academic credit
- 135 hours over the semester (approximately 9 hours per week for 15 weeks)
- Mid-semester and final evaluations
Learning Opportunities and Responsibilities
- Develop skills in broadcast writing, AP style, sourcing and newsroom editorial standards
- Learn to research, schedule and help produce interviews for NSPR news anchors
- Learn to write for the ear and record short news stories for NSPR newscasts with guidance from newsroom staff
- Learn basic audio editing, including selecting and cutting tape for broadcast
- Participate in newsroom meetings and professional trainings through NPR and the California News Hub
- Shadow NSPR journalists during interviews, field reporting and program production
- Complete a final radio news project demonstrating skills developed during the internship
Qualifications
- Chico State Journalism, English or Communications major
- Meets department requirements for academic credit internship
- Strong writing, editing and communication skills
- Interest in local news and digital storytelling
- Willingness to learn and receive feedback in a fast-paced newsroom
- Completion of a copy-editing course preferred

Digital News Production Intern
Position Summary
The Digital News Production Intern will gain hands-on experience producing digital content for North State Public Radio (NSPR) while learning how local news is adapted and presented for online audiences. The intern will work in NSPR’s newsroom alongside journalists to develop skills in digital writing, editing, publishing and audience engagement.

Learning Opportunities and Responsibilities
- Develop skills in digital news writing, editing, AP style and newsroom editorial standards
- Learn to adapt broadcast stories for NSPR’s website and other digital platforms
- Learn to write and produce newsletters highlighting NSPR’s local news coverage
- Develop skills in writing headlines, summaries and other digital copy
- Learn how digital content is published, organized and presented to online audiences
- Participate in newsroom meetings and professional trainings through NPR and the California News Hub
- Shadow NSPR journalists and digital staff to learn how news is produced across platforms
- Complete a final digital news project demonstrating skills developed during the internship
Qualifications

The intern will work in NSPR’s newsroom alongside journalists to develop skills in visual news gathering, photography, video production and editing.

- Develop skills in news photography, video production, visual storytelling and journalistic standards
- Learn to plan, shoot and edit photos and video for NSPR news stories and digital platforms
- Work with reporters and editors to identify visual opportunities for local news coverage
- Learn to produce short-form news videos for NSPR’s digital and social platforms
- Develop basic photo and video editing skills for publication
- Participate in newsroom meetings and professional trainings through NPR and the California News Hub
- Shadow NSPR journalists during interviews, field reporting and other news coverage
- Complete a final visual news project demonstrating skills developed during the internship
